Check out this CNN story about a couple that was burglarized by one of their Facebook friends while they were at a concert. A concert they had just posted on Facebook that they were leaving to go see.

CNN Story About Facebook Burglary

Do you have a business Facebook Fan Page? Do you run a home based business? Do you tell all your Facebook friends that you are going to be at that big trade show in Las Vegas this upcoming weekend? Do you suggest things in your postings that would lead people to know that you have a huge inventory of valuable items currently on hand?

What makes this an issue for business owners, is that we are always trying to accept every possible friend request that comes our way so that we can build up our network. Many of these people we accept as friends we don’t really know, do we? Or they are friends of friends of friends. (Of course, none of my friends would do something like this would you? LOL!)

Be very very careful how much information you are putting out there in Facebook.

As a business owner would it be of value to know how many people saw your company listed on that little map at the top of a Google search?

Would it be even better if you could tell how many of them actually clicked your site from that list?

Or even better, what words did they type to get your site to show up in the map?

All these things are possible with a free service from Google called, Google Places.

It’s a bit hard to see, but here’s a chart of the information available through Google Places.

This business showed up almost 7,500 times in one month on the map. They can also see exactly what search words were used to get them to show up on the map.

So where’s the real value? Marketing intelligence!

There are a ton of people out there “Searching” for your service by key word. You now know what those key words are and you can focus on those words in all your advertising efforts, not just on your Website.

Oh, and look at the fact that 57 people clicked the“More info…” link on the map. Which should beg the question….

…How current is your Business information with Google?

If you don’t know, or don’t know how to check this, contact us and we can easily walk you through the process, or do it for you.

Did I mention that Google Places is free from Google?

Most businesses today have clients that are good people, who want to pay their outstanding balances, but they just can’t seem to pull enough cash together to write that check. What should you do? No, do not hire someone like Luca Brasi.

<!-- –>

Something much simpler (and legal) is to use a tool like Pay Pal, Google Checkout or some other simple online credit card processing application.

By using these tools, and adding a simple form like the one below to your Web site, you can give your clients the ability to use credit cards to quickly pay any outstanding balances.

How many delinquent client bills do you have out there? Many of them would love to pay you if they could just charge it to their credit card.

It’s not complicated to set this kind of process up in your Web site. Given an established Pay Pal account, an experienced Web developer can add the type of form above to a Website in about 20 to 30 minutes.

Presto, you’re done. You can now direct people to your Web site to pay their outstanding bills with their credit cards

No sleeping with the fishes tonight please

I recently had the opportunity to speak to a networking group about how small businesses should use social media. I spent a couple weeks thinking about what I was going to present, the topics that I was going to cover, and most importantly I wanted this not to be your typical “here’s how you use Facebook and Twitter” presentation. I put together an outline and gave lots of thought to providing a positive but realistic spin on the whole use of social media for small business.

I gave the presentation and received great positive feedback.

Now here’s the amazing thing. About a day after the presentation I got an email from Constant Contact talking about new functionality, and a couple presentations they are offering about social media for small business.

OMG!! Their outline and topics were exactly the same as mine!! Now I’m not suggesting they stole my presentation. Their stuff I’m sure was worked over for months before they put it out there for people to view and learn. But, I feel so vindicated that a large national company had the exact same set of advice and assistance and topics that I came up with. Almost made me feel somewhat like an expert

Here’s a link to their materials. http://www.constantcontact.com/social-media-for-small-business/index.jsp I’m going to work on my formatting and then hang my presentation on my Web site as well.

As always I like to keep my answers simple….

The best way to get more people to your Website is to spend time or money getting them there.

Sorry, but there’s no magic to it. Just create a detailed plan of how you are going to spend your time or money directing people to your Website, and it will happen.

For those of you with Brick and Mortar locations, every customer that comes up to the register should see a sign or detailed offering that’s available only on your Website.

For home business owners, how often are you sending emails to your existing customers? What’s in those emails? There should be something of value that they can only get from your Website.

Home business owners, you have to advertise. What in your advertising is compelling them to visit your Website, besides your www. address?

For businesses that run national online shopping carts, how are you communicating with customers who have made previous purchases, AND, how much are you spending on advertising?

Lastly, using online social media. When you use those fun tools like Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, etc… Are you using those tools to drive people to your Website? Everything going on with your company should be on your Web site. Use social online media tools to drive people to your site.

Does it have statements on it like.. “You must be using online social media or you will become irrelevant and go out of business.” Folks, it’s one thing to tell people about hot new trends in advertising. It’s another thing to tell people they must be use them or else they’re going to go out of business. Stay away from companies that are trying to scare you into buying their services. Are you doing television advertising? Why not? A ton of people watch TV? Are you doing radio advertising? Why not? Magazine advertising? etc, etc?

2. How does your potential customer pick a company that provides the type of service your company provides? A good social online media company will not just come charging in and sell you a Facebook, Linked-In and Twitter set up. They should first work with you and determine what tools your potential clients are using and market towards those tools.

3. Measurements? As with all forms of advertising, are you measuring the success of your efforts. Online social media is notorious for being unable to get good ROI numbers. Most consulting companies will just tell you that you need to be doing it and you’ll over time get a good feeling that something is working out there. Just say NO!!! Tell them that you want specific measurement tactics so you can determine how many clients you’re getting out of their efforts for you.

How well does your Website support sales representatives needs? Have you asked them lately what do they think of your Company site? One simple thing like a photo gallery of updated products may be just the thing they need to turn that next big deal.

Or, how about a coupon they can direct potential clients to during the sales conversation that’s just the thing needed to push them past candidate client to signed client.

As business owners we’re always concerned first about our company’s image.

First off, let me explain what Bing is? Bing is the third largest search engine out there. Number 1 is Google, number 2 is Yahoo, and then comes Bing. Bing used to be called MSN Search, but Microsoft wanted to shake up the name and establish a better search engine brand so they upgraded the MSN search engine and renamed it Bing.

How’s Bing doing in relation to the Google and Yahoo? Well, last week 72% of Americans searched using Google, 14.5% used Yahoo, and about 9.5% used Bing. These percentages have been holding steady for about a year now.

Search Google for “Life in New York” and you will find Websites the have the terms “Life in New York” in them. Search the same term in Bing and you will get Apartment and Restaurant results. Bing wants to interpret what you type in and provide results based on it’s interpretation. Google just tries to find matches. Which one is better?

Well, if I’m looking for a plumber in Olathe I’m definately going to use Google. If I want to know something fun to do this Saturday in Olathe I’d probably use Bing.

If you’re a small business wanting to show up in a search engine I suggest you always focus first on Google (72%) But think about how you might take advantage of a more nebulas approach to getting noticed on the Internet with Bing.
