The Origin of Prairie Village
Following the successful completion of the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri, J.C. Nichols turned his attention to developing his native Johnson County, just a few miles away from the Plaza. In 1941, Prairie Village was platted and named after the Prairie School, which was established almost a century earlier. In 1949, Prairie Village was recognized as the best planned community in America by the National Association of Home Builders, and it officially became a city in 1951.
The city of Prairie Village has remnants of the Santa Fe Trail, a historical trail, within its boundaries. The land that is now Prairie Village was originally inhabited by Shawnee, Osage, and Kansa Indians. In 1858, Thomas Porter purchased 160 acres of farmland in the area, where he raised his children and contributed to agricultural development and civic affairs. Porter's sister, Betty Porter, married Thompson A. Lewis, who owned 80 acres nearby.
In the mid-1860s, Henry Coppock arrived in Johnson County and purchased land in 1865. He built his family home on 900 acres in Prairie Village, which stood for 30 years and is now the location of Homestead County Club.
The original Prairie School was built in 1882, and a new building was constructed in 1912, serving as a community landmark until 1990.
In the 1940s, experienced developer J.C. Nichols envisioned transforming the farmland into suburban housing for returning soldiers after World War II. Despite challenges, such as a shortage of experienced builders, Nichols purchased land from the Porters, Coppocks, and Lewises, and Prairie Village continued to expand. The Prairie Village Shopping Center opened in 1947, followed by the Corinth Square Shopping Center in 1955.
