September 30th Development Meeting
Today’s meeting was mainly about site size and how we can reduce the size.
Sean and I discussed the LED2 site and the features I used. This is the first site where I made sure we compressed all files before uploading. I took all their 122 images and ran them through tinypng.com before uploading, saving hundreds of megabytes. I even took their PDFs and used ilovepdf.com to compress them. This saved a lot of megabytes as well. We looked at the site’s size and took the products page and got it down from 2.4MB to 900KB by reducing the the max image size for the grid layout. This issue of how to not pull the largest version of the image has been one we’ve briefly talked about before. With today’s meeting and playing around with LED2 we’ve got a good idea how handle it for grid layouts and this idea could be used throughout the site if we are able to set specific max widths of elements. The key thing to watch out for is that we don’t use a small image and have it respond with a large blurry image.
We got to review the Advanced Custom Fields plugin that Sean is just now starting to use. I showed him with LED2 how I was able to specify what image size to display in the grid. Sean said he is using the plugin more instead of the Site Options (old way), but hasn’t made any site with it live yet.
We also talked about a new popup plugin (PopUp by Supsystic), which allows us to create a nice looking popup and have text and even a form within it. This was used on the LED2 website for several of their forms.
